Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes is leading Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell just two days after she launched her Kentucky Senate campaign, albeit by a tiny amount, a new poll has found.

According to a poll by the Democrat-leaning Public Policy Polling firm of 1,210 Kentucky voters, Grimes leads the Republican by 1 percent, or 45 percent to 44 percent.

The poll also showed that 40 percent of voters give McConnell a positive job approval rating, while 51 percent disapprove.

The figures, however, differ from a poll conducted by the firm in late May showing McConnell and Grimes in a dead heat at 45 percent. In the earlier poll, McConnell had a higher job approval rating at 44 percent, and a lower disapproval rating at 47 percent.

Grimes, a 34-year-old who has been the Kentucky secretary of state for just over a year, officially launched her campaign on Tuesday buoyed by a strong endorsement from Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The campaign is expected to be one of the most highly competitive races of the 2014 midterm elections.
