President Donald Trump on Friday delivered his harshest criticism yet about former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, urging voters to “not trust” him in the GOP race for U.S. Senate in Alabama.
In a tweet, Trump appeared to tie Sessions’ firing to special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, linking to a post from Sessions’ Senate race rival that accused him of “running scared” when he recused himself from control of the Russia investigation in 2017.
“3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began," Trump wrote. "Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!"
Tuberville, a pro-Trump Republican, is leading the race, according to a new poll.
Trump signaled his support for Tuberville in early March after he narrowly defeated Sessions but failed to gain a majority to win the primary vote, which is now set for July 14. The winner will face incumbent Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala.
