Jeh Johnson defended and advocated for Michael McCaul to succeed him as Homeland Security Secretary, The Washington Times reported.

"I don't know anybody who is stronger on border security in Congress that I have dealt with," Johnson said Wednesday at a forum.

Johnson came to McCaul's defense after a report border hawks were disappointed in the candidacy of McCaul, who they say was not strong enough in opposing President Obama's weak immigration laws.

"To say somehow I am not strong on immigration is laughable because, whether it's sanctuary cities to every vote on the floor of the House, I have strongly voted against illegal immigration," McCaul said, the Times reported. "I have co-sponsored virtually every bill. I introduced the SAFE Act, which would stop the flow of Syrian refugees into this country. I also strongly support the Secure Fence Act."

McCaul met with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss the position Tuesday.
