House of Representatives staffers continue to be employed by Democratic congressmen despite being under investigation for the theft of equipment and data, Politico reported.
Imran Awan, a longtime House staffer who has worked for more than two dozen Democrats since 2004, is still employed by Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, even though his access to the House IT network has been blocked since last week due to the probe.
When asked if Awan was still working for Wasserman Schultz, her communications director told Politico: "At this time we are continuing to gather information from House officials and will determine the best approach to move forward once we have reviewed that information."
Several relatives of Awan are also being investigated in connection to the alleged procurement scam, and at least one of them is still employed by a congressman, Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York.
Those accused in the scam were "shared employees," meaning they were hired by several offices, which split their salaries and use them as needed for IT services, The Daily Caller reported.
Although some of the congressmen have fired those being investigated, not all the representatives for whom they work has fired them.
A Capitol Police spokeswoman said an investigation into the allegations was still ongoing, and arrests have not yet been made.
