House Republicans are planning to remove Rep. Duncan Hunter from the three committees on which he serves when Congress reconvenes after summer recess, Politico reported Wednesday.
The report comes a day after House Speaker Paul Ryan stripped Hunter of his assignments in the aftermath of an indictment against the California Republican for misusing campaign funds.
Hunter is refusing to step down from his committees.
Politico reports the House Steering Committee has added Hunter to the docket of its Sept. 4 meeting, during which it's expected he'll be removed. The move will go to the full House GOP conference Sept. 5 before moving for a full House vote.
Hunter serves on the Armed Services, Education and the Workforce and Transportation and Infrastructure committees as well as six sub-committees.
Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted for using $250,000 in campaign funds for family vacations and other sundry personal expenses.
Hunter's indictment could also complicate his reelection chances in November. The incumbent faces Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar, former White House aide to President Barack Obama, in California's District 50 general election.
