Eleven House lawmakers have sent a letter to the Senate leadership urging confirmation of Mark Green, President Donald Trump's pick for Army secretary, the Washington Examiner reported.
The House members, include six members from Green's home state of Tennessee and Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif. Their letter was sent to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Sen John McCain, R-Ariz., the chairman of the Senate Armed Service Committee.
"Any attempt to politicize personal statements or views that have been expressed by Mark at any point throughout his career must not be allowed to supersede his qualifications or be conflated to create needless uncertainty with his nomination," the lawmakers wrote in the letter.
It comes as CNN reported Green may drop out due to opposition over controversial comments he made in the past on LGBT issues, Islam and evolution.
CNN had reported his nomination is in serious jeopardy and he could be withdrawing as soon as this week.
But a political adviser to Green denied his nomination was in jeopardy and that he might withdraw, USA Today reported.
Meanwhile, McCain said Green's past comments are "very concerning," the newspaper said.
"There's a lot of controversy concerning his nomination," McCain, whose committee will hold Green's confirmation hearing, told the newspaper.
"We are getting some questions from both Republicans and Democrats on the Armed Services Committee. I think there are some issues that clearly need to be cleared up."
