Conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt is urging the Republican Party to take steps at its national convention to remove Donald Trump as the presidential nominee or Hillary Clinton would win the presidency.
"She's going to be president unless Republicans change their nominee," Hewitt said Wednesday, according to The Huffington Post.
The Post reports that Trump's criticism of Judge Gonzalo Curiel's Mexican heritage was the last straw for Hewitt.
The radio host suggested a new convention rule that the first ballot must require a supermajority.
"Make the delegates own it," Hewitt said, adding, "If you are going to commit suicide and someone is giving you a gun, don't blame the gun."
Hewitt said that he attempted to support Trump. "I gave it as long as I could," he said in a clip from his show on
YouTube.
"The Republican National Committee needs to step in, and step up, and go see Donald Trump, and talk to him about getting out of the race," he said.
Hewitt voiced his concern for other Republican nominees down the ballot. "There's going to be scores of Republican office holders around the United States, in Washington D.C. and around the states, who don't have jobs.
"Trump doesn't care. He's still going to be a billionaire," Hewitt said.
