Radio host and columnist Hugh Hewitt offered praise for two incoming members of President Donald Trump's administration, national security adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"I am impressed with this selection because it reminds me of late (Ronald) Reagan-era breadth and depth of competence," Hewitt said on "The Global Politico" podcast.

Bolton is a "truly class A intellect" and is "as gracious, charming, and good-humored as anyone I know," Hewitt said. And Pompeo has a "raw intelligence" and  "a lot of competence," pointing out on he was number one in his West Point class.

"John Bolton is very much for a muscular American foreign policy in the Reagan mold… he is a Reagan conservative full stop," Hewitt said.

Hewitt said that he believed Pompeo would be easily confirmed for the secretary position, and would be a better fit for the role than Rex Tillerson.

"I'm hoping that Pompeo replaces Tillerson, and you go from a dysfunctional relationship between the White House and Foggy Bottom to a very close, almost seamless wielding of authority," Hewitt said, referring to the Washington, D.C. location of the State Department.

"You've got to have that relationship or it doesn't work in any kind of international forum or any kind of negotiation," Hewitt said on the podcast.
