A majority of Iowans now disapprove of the job President Donald Trump is doing, with independents the biggest group turning against the president, according to a new Des Moines Register poll.
The results, according to the survey:
- 52 percent of Iowans disapprove of Trump's performance.
- 43 percent of Iowans approve.
- 59 percent of independents disapprove of Trump, 9 points worse from a poll 5 months ago.
Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 10 points in Iowa in November's election.
Further, 56 percent of Iowans think the country is on the wrong track, with just 32 percent saying it's headed in the right direction, according to the survey.
However, Trump is still strong with his base in Iowa, the survey found:
- 90 percent who voted for Trump approve of his performance.
- 57 percent of born-again Christians back Trump.
- 63 percent of Iowans from rural areas approve of his performance.
Trump's negative numbers is an outlier among other top Republican polls in the state — Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst enjoy approval ratings of at least 50 percent.
The poll of 800 Iowa adults was conducted July 9-13 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
