Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz threw his support behind Mitt Romney to replace retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, should he choose to run.

Romney is "one of the most beloved figures," in Utah, Chaffetz said on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" Wednesday, adding that the former Massachusetts governor "has a home in Holladay, Utah, he attended Brigham Young University, he saved Utah for the Olympics in 2002, he was the presidential nominee. He's going to win."

Only hours after Hatch announced his retirement, Romney changed his location on Twitter from Massachusetts to Holladay, Utah, as first noticed by Bloomberg's Sahil Kapur.

Chaffetz, who retired from Congress last year, added that Romney would make a "really good senator," and noting that the former GOP presidential nominee has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump since he began campaigning for the White House.

"The reality is the most beloved political figure in Utah is Mitt Romney, and he will be the next senator if he decides to run," Chaffetz said.
