Ex-Bush Aide: Hillary Wants Jeb to Win as He's Easiest to Beat

Donald Trump is right — Hillary Clinton's campaign wants former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to be the Republican nominee because he's the easiest to beat, says Matt Latimer, former speechwriter for President George W. Bush.

When Clinton took on Bush after he said that he's "not sure we need a half a billion dollars for women's health issues," Trump said that the reason Clinton singled Bush out is because the Clinton camp wants to elevate him, in hope that he becomes the Republican nominee, Latimer writes in an opinion piece for Politico.

Latimer warns that "Republicans ought to think hard about the reasons why Bush might be the easiest of the serious GOP contenders for the Clintons to beat. And it’s not just because they’ve done it before."

Just like the Clintons, the Bushes also have political baggage, and the former Florida governor "is being crushed under the weight of it."

Bush has turned out to be a lot more gaffe prone than expected, Lattimer says. For example, Bush should have been prepared to answer questions about the war in Iraq, which was started by his brother. And it's a question that Democrats are likely to bring up again.

And Bush will likely face more questions about decisions made by his brother and father during their presidencies.

The other issue that could hurt Bush is the fact that while Clintons and Bushes are political opponents, they also like to work together on charitable projects, such as the Leadership program formed by George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Bush also lauded Clinton with an award for living "her life to serve and engaging people across the world in democracy" just two years ago.

According to Latimer, because Bush is running a "very predictable" campaign in a similar fashion as his brother and father, he's the "least likely to surprise the Clintons."

Bush is also having trouble gaining support from the Republican base, which questions his conservative credentials, which may mean that Republicans won't be very excited to turn out to vote for him, Latimer added.
