Fresh off his pardon from President Donald Trump, former Sheriff Joe Arpaio now has sights set on political office again, perhaps even taking on unpopular Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, he told the Washington Examiner.

"I could run for mayor, I could run for legislator, I could run for Senate," Arpaio told the Examiner on Monday. "I'm sure getting a lot of people around the state asking me" to run against Flake.

"With what I've seen happening in recent months, especially what's happening with our president, I said, 'Hey, why not?'" Arpaio told the Examiner.

Arpaio told a Virginia radio station Saturday that he would make an announcement sometime this week about a return to politics.

"I'm going to be very active in the political arena," Arpaio told host Steve Malzberg on Saturday. "Somebody has to speak out. I'm going to do it."

Flake already has one Republican challenger in Kelli Ward, who has been on the receiving end of social media support from Trump and has a 14-point lead on Flake.
