Former House Speaker John Boehner says if the GOP presidential primary leads to a contested convention, he'd throw his support behind his successor, Paul Ryan.

"If we don't have a nominee who can win on the first ballot, I'm for none of the above," Boehner said at the Futures Industry Association conference in Boca Raton, Fla., on Wednesday, Politico reports.

"They all had a chance to win. None of them won. So I'm for none of the above. I'm for Paul Ryan to be our nominee."

The former Ohio lawmaker argues "anybody can be nominated" at the convention in Cleveland this summer, according to Politico.

In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, the Wisconsin lawmaker wasn't categorically against the idea of jumping into the fray.

"People say, 'What about the contested convention?' I say, well, there are a lot of people running for president," Ryan said. "We'll see. Who knows."
