Former House Speaker John Boehner plans to hit the road this summer to campaign for Republicans in an effort to keep the GOP majority in the House, CNN is reporting.

Boehner will travel across country aboard a rented motor coach, dubbed "Freedom One." At least seven stops have been confirmed so far and more are expected, the news network said.

"Why does he do it? said Dave Schnittger, a spokesman for Boehner. "He likes getting out among the people, mixing it up and feeling the pulse of the nation, while supporting his former colleagues and the next generation of leaders."

"He didn't do it last summer, and he missed it. Actually, I think 'miserable' is the word he used. This summer there's both a demand for it and a renewed desire on his part, so it was an easy call."

Boehner first started the campaign bus tours in the late 1990s when he was the House Republican conference chairman. The tradition continued in 2016 even after Boehner had left Congress, CNN reported.

Boehner represented a portion of southwest Ohio for more than two decades and served as speaker from 2011 until he resigned in October 2015, The Hill noted.

He has maintained a relatively low profile since he left Congress, according to The Hill.
