Sen. John Cornyn Wants Special Counsel on Hillary's Emails

Sen. John Cornyn Monday called for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton's emails, saying he doesn't have the same confidence in Attorney General Loretta Lynch as a "political appointee of the president."

"We know her server was the target of adversaries of the United States," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" host Bill Hemmer. We don't know how much intelligence was sacrificed with our foreign policy operatives or negotiations around the world, because she was so reckless to have [her email] on a private email server."

The FBI is continuing its investigation, and Cornyn said he has confidence that the agency will "not make a political call, but follow facts where they may lead."

However, he believes an independent agent should work to follow the facts and enforce the law.

Meanwhile, Cornyn said he agrees with House Select Committee on Benghazi Chairman Trey Gowdy that future hearings should be held behind closed doors to avoid the "grandstanding" that took place during Clinton's hearing last week.

"He is a former professional attorney and prosecutor and he is exactly right," said Cornyn. "That hearing was more of a distraction in the pursuit of the facts, because Secretary Clinton simply didn't answer a lot of the questions. Her whole goal was to make this look political, which it is not. Four Americans lost their lives in Benghazi."

Cornyn also accused Clinton of obstructing the probe by having a private email server and sticking to the "false narrative" that the attack was incited by a video.
