Department of Homeland Security spokesperson David Lapan may be in line for the White House communications director job, two administration sources told CNNMoney.

Lapan is the top person being considered for the position formerly held by Anthony Scaramucci.

New White House chief of staff John Kelly has worked with Lapan for more than 10 years. He comes from a military background like Kelly and he was in charge of press operations at the Defense Department and the Marine Corps, the news network said.

Lapan told CNNMoney that he had not been in contact with Kelly or the White House about the job.

"I've seen speculation, but at this point it's only speculation. I haven't talked to him or anybody else about it," Lapan said, adding that he would consider the offer if asked.

"I couldn't say today what my answer would be," he added.
