The Libertarian ticket of Gary Johnson and running mate William Weld will be the "bigger headache for the Republican ticket," as they are on all 50 ballots and will come out even stronger than "Bill Kristol's possible fifth-party candidate," former White House Chief of Staff John Sununu said Wednesday.
"The Libertarians are on all 50 ballots; they are strong in New Hampshire," Sununu, also a former New Hampshire governor, told
MSNBC's Steve Kornacki.
"That is why I think you will see the Republican Party working this bifurcated agenda trying to make sure people come out to vote and come out to vote for the down ballot."
Also, Sununu said he expects in some states, people will urge voters coming out to vote for the Libertarian candidates to make sure they vote for others on the Republican ballot.
"It's a complicated race and old rules are probably not going to apply," said Sununu. "You and I will probably be talking about this half a dozen times between now and then. I'm sure we will be shaking our heads and saying this is different than anything we have ever seen."
Meanwhile, Sununu, who initially opposed Donald Trump, said he has made a commitment to vote for the eventual Republican nominee, and will stick to that commitment, as he believes a Republican president will "undo the mess that Obama caused in the last seven and one-half years. Right now the only formula is a Republican president. I'm going to vote for Donald Trump for president."
Republicans, he continued, have worked hard over the last decade to win 31 governors races, control 31 state houses, and 75 percent of the state legislatures.
"They worked very hard to pull grassroots [support] together," said Sununu. "My feeling is the party does have to come together in order to maintain that momentum. I have a son running for governor. I am concerned about the down ballot. I am concerned about the U.S. Senate. I am concerned about the Congress. The only formula I see for making sure that all those critical races do go to Republicans so we can undo the mess in Washington is to support the ticket."
Also on Wednesday, Sununu said he expects Hillary Clinton to use the Trump University case to try to turn the issues of honesty and character around on Trump.
"She is going to have to find something that is going to take the weight of the email issues and the character issue," said Sununu. "Her weakest point is a lack of character and Trump calling her 'Crooked Hillary,' I think, has some capacity of sticking."
