If voters had their way, Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch would be confirmed by a 49 percent-37 percent margin, according to a new Fox News poll.
The other 14 percent are undecided.
Republicans favor the nominee of GOP President Donald Trump by a much higher margin — 82 percent — while only 17 percent of Democrats do. A majority of independents — 54 percent — think Gorsuch should be confirmed.
While Gorsuch draws favorable reviews from both sides of the aisle, his nomination has drawn controversy after Republicans last year refused to even hold hearings on then-President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland.
The seat was made vacant with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016, and Republicans, who control the Senate, opted to wait until after November's presidential election to vote on a successor to the high court's most conservative member.
The poll showed Gorsuch more popular with men (57 percent) than women (42 percent) as well.
About half of voters think the court's ideological balance is about right, while almost a one-third think they are too liberal. Only 18 percent think they are too conservative.
Of the three branches of government, the judicial branch is by far the most trusted, according to the poll:
- Judicial branch: 45 percent.
- Executive branch: 26 percent.
- Legislative branch:13 percent.
Ten percent said they trusted none of the three branches.
The poll talked to 1,013 registered voters by cell and landline telephones Feb. 11-13. It has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3 percentage points.
