The Justice Department is investigating Rep. Duncan Hunter, according to the Washington Examiner.
The House Ethics Committee said it was delaying its probe of the California Republican's issue after being asked to do so by the Justice Department, which is a sign that the department is running an investigation of its own, the Examiner reports.
The committee has not said what the issue is, and it is not releasing the Office of Congressional Ethics report about the alleged violation.
The San Diego Union Tribune, Hunter's local paper, said he might be in violation of House rules by getting a loan to pay back his campaign for $50,000 in personal expenses.
Hunter's campaign reported that he spent money on items that appeared to be personal in 2015 and 2016, including groceries, outdoor equipment, visits to a dentist, a nail salon, a hotel in Italy, and the Arizona Grand Resort. He repaid his campaign nearly $60,000 after that, according to Politico.
