Reaction to Joe Biden's pick of Sen. Kamala Harris as his vice presidential running mate was swift and, naturally, leaning to the commenter's own political leanings on Tuesday.
Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin wrote:
"The pick marks the end of the assumption that African American women are risky, a deviation from 'normal.' They can energize critical voters, expand the party and speak with authenticity to the gravest issues of the day.
Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, tweeted of his colleague: "This is history. Kamala is a trailblazer who will serve this country well as the first Black and Asian American woman on a major party's ticket."
Harris, 55, is the daughter of immigrants. Her father is from Jamaica and her mother is from India.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, noted, "I've been lucky to get to fight alongside my friend @KamalaHarris in the Senate—and I’m thrilled to support her through her next journey."
But Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina had something of backhanded compliment for Harris:
"Senator @KamalaHarris will be a formidable opponent. She is smart, aggressive, and has fully bought in to the Democratic Party’s very liberal agenda."
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, was more direct: "GovTrak ranked Kamala Harris the #1 most liberal Senator for 2019."
The Heartland Institute President, James Taylor, in an emailed statement to Newsmax said, "Kamala Harris' climate plan would bludgeon America's environment and economy almost as much as she bludgeoned innocent people's rights as a prosecutor. She admits that her climate plan will cost $10 trillion, which is a staggering $100,000 per American household. American families simply don't have $100,000 sitting around to pay for Harris' climate plan."
National Review's Jim Geraghty was one of the few on the right who struck a conciliatory tone, saying:
"You know, whatever else you think of Kamala Harris, it’s pretty amazing and awesome that immigrants can come to the U.S., meet, marry, have a child, and their daughter can grow up to be DA, state attorney general, U.S. Senator, and on a presidential ticket."
