Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., in a podcast published Tuesday said President Donald Trump should be put on a "timeout across the board" when asked whether she thought a president under impeachment proceedings should be allowed to appoint a Supreme Court nominee.
"That's a great question," she responded during an interview with "Iowa Starting Line Podcast."
"I think he should be put on a timeout across the board."
Trump, who took office in 2017 and is seeking re-election next year, already has appointed two justices – conservatives Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch – who tilts court to the right.
The court has a 5-4 majority, and two of the four liberal justices are older than 81. Ruth Ginsburg is 86 and has endured a series of health scares.
Harris also said House Democrats need to "do everything possible" to protect whistleblowers from Trump.
"He is clearly committing crimes in plain view," she said. "He has engaged in suppression of evidence. He has intimidated witnesses. He is creating fear."
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced impeachment proceedings against the president following the release of a whistleblower complaint that alleged Trump attempted to pressure a foreign leader to investigate Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 election.
