House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy lent his support Wednesday to President Donald Trump for firing of James Comey, charging he'd "made the FBI political," Politico reported.
In remarks to Politico at an event in San Francisco, the California Republican said Comey acted beyond the reach of his role as FBI director.
"I would argue that Comey made the FBI political," he told Politico. "That's probably not the place to be."
McCarthy added that Comey had wrongly made himself "a household name" – and said Trump was right to can him.
"You serve at the pleasure [of the president]," McCarthy told Politico. "For the good of the FBI and the country, it's probably a good decision. So let's move on."
"If you lose trust, you gotta change," he added. "I know there's never a perfect time for it. It sure comes down to trust and morale”
