President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address was a disappointing spew of “hyperbole,’’ according to Utah Sen. Mike Lee.
“I didn’t like it,’’ the Republican lawmaker told Newsmax late Tuesday. “I disliked almost from start to finish. I wish I could say otherwise.’’
Lee said it was the third State of the Union address from President Obama he had “endured,’’ with each one getting progressively worse.
“The low point was when he had the audacity to call out Congress,’’ Lee said, referring to Obama’s pleas for GOP lawmakers to get behind his tax and spend plans and legislative pitches. “It was lawless hyperbole …This was all in-your-face politics.’’
Lee said he was particularly stunned by the president’s plan to raise more taxes following the $800 billion tax increase that Washington passed just last month.
The Beehive State senator was also jolted by Obama’s references to government taking steps to build a “thriving middle-class.’’
“What is broken about the middle class?’’ Lee asked. “I don’t know he intends to fix it … It’s the pinnacle of arrogance.’’
The speech showed the “deeply-held philosophical differences’’ between Republicans and Democrats, he said.
“It’s not true that our problems can be served by bigger government,’’ Lee said. “He basically blamed these problems on that our government isn’t big enough. That, I find it nothing short of stunning.’’
