Evangelical writer Jerushah Duford is throwing her support behind Joe Biden, Forbes reports.
The granddaughter of late televangelist Billy Graham has become part of a new women’s coalition of The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump political action committee.
The group, co-founded by George Conway, husband of outgoing White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, is aiming to oust President Donald Trump from the White House.
“After four years of blatant misogyny, civil unrest and failed leadership from President Trump, The Lincoln Project continues our crusade to abolish his chances of reelection by announcing the first wave of fierce women to lead our Lincoln Women coalition,” Conway said in a statement Monday announcing the women’s coalition.
In response, Duford tweeted: “Honored to have met and to stand with powerful women who can no longer ignore the tug in their spirit when they look at our country. #lincolnwomen”
She told Forbes she wants to reach out to women who don’t feel comfortable voting for a Democrat. She said for many it could be the first time they don't vote for a Republican candidate.
“I’m speaking to the woman who feels that tug in their spirit,” she told Forbes. “It’s okay to follow your conscience. And it’s okay to use your voice at the polls this November.”
She told the publication she doesn’t know how anyone can reconcile the differences of the lessons of Jesus with what the world has seen come out of the White House during Trump’s first term.
Duford is also the niece of conservative evangelical leader Franklin Graham. Graham is scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention on Thursday.
Duford told Newsweek she hasn’t spoken to her uncle, but “his voice was a large reason for my speaking out.”
She told Newsweek that when “church leaders hold Trump up as a representative of our faith, the damage to the Gospel is immense.”
“The world sees the hypocrisy, and the result is [they want] nothing to do with it,” she said.
