Rejecting any suggestion President Donald Trump committed obstruction of justice, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, angrily lobbed the claim Wednesday former special counsel Robert Mueller "perpetuated injustice."
"If somebody knows they did not conspire with anybody from Russia to affect the election, and they see the big Justice Department – with people that hate that person coming after him – and then a special counsel appointed who hires dozens or more people that hate the person – and he knows he's innocent – he's not corruptly acting in order to see that justice is done," Rep. Gohmert exulted as he was being gaveled by House Intelligence Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., at the end of his allotted five minutes to question Mueller.
"What's he's doing is not obstructing justice, he's pursuing justice. And the fact you ran it out two years means you perpetuated injustice."
Mueller, who sat silent during the completion of Rep. Gohmert's time, responded after Rep. Nadler's gavel, deadpanning twice without elaboration: "I take your question."
It was one of the most animated exchanges of Mueller's congressional testimony Wednesday.
Gohmert's questioning was tied to the Mueller report claims President Donald Trump might have committed obstruction of justice – a determination the special counsel did not make before submitting their report to Attorney General William Barr.
AG Barr then decided the Department of Justice would not pursue a case of obstruction of justice by the president, but Mueller had intimated during his testimony Wednesday an obstruction of justice case could be brought against a president after they left office.
Calling for "disarmament" of "weaponizing criminal justice," Alan Dershowitz called that possibility a political "nightmare" on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now."
"The nightmare theory is that the Democrats win the election, radical Democrats win the election, and they instruct the attorney general, 'let's do what we do in banana republics; let's go after the outgoing president, and let's put him on trial," Dershowitz lamented.
"I don't think it's gonna happen. I hope it's not gonna happen. But with some members of the Democratic Party, it could happen."
