President Donald Trump tweeted another endorsement for Sen. Luther Strange Monday morning in the Alabama Senate special election to fill the position left when Jeff Sessions was named attorney general.
After Sessions' appointment, Strange, R-Ala., was named to temporarily fill the position. Trump had previously endorsed Strange on Aug. 8, saying that Strange "has done a great job representing the Great State of Alabama. He has my complete and total endorsement!"
Allies of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and the National Rifle Association are also backing Strange, but he is facing opposition from Roy Moore, a favorite of evangelical voters, according to a Sunday report in The New York Times.
Strange is facing difficulty because of his link to Alabama's now-former governor, Robert Bentley, who resigned amid a sex scandal, according to The Times. Bentley appointed Strange in February before resigning from the governorship in April. Strange had been the Alabama attorney general and was overseeing an investigation into Bentley at the time of his appointment, The Times noted.
The president's endorsement led House Freedom Caucus member Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., who is also running for the position, to ask Trump to reconsider.
Brooks said he was "baffled and disappointed" that Trump would endorse Strange.
Alabama voters will choose Sessions' replacement Tuesday in a special election.
