Albright Hopes Trump Understands 'Complexity of the Issues'

Now that Donald Trump has been elected president, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said she hopes he comes to understand the "complexity of the issues" when it comes to foreign policy.

"I'm hoping that once Donald Trump gets a really full intelligence briefing he will understand the complexity of the issues and how they go together and that life in the foreign policy field is not a zero sum world," Albright told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell.

"That in fact there are an awful lot of relationships that have been essential to how America functions internationally and that are very, very important to the American people."

Further, Albright, the first female secretary of State, said she thinks Trump will come to recognize the importance of a relationship with Russia, but the question remains on what basis, and "how he understands what is really going on" there.

Albright, a staunch Hillary Clinton supporter, on Wednesday praised her as the "best single prepared candidate ever to run for president," and called her concession speech "important and classy."

"We've always also known whether in journalism or public service or in business that it's never easy for women," said Albright, and she thinks eventually a woman will become president.

"I think it will happen, and we have to support each other in having it happen, because it's not easy," she said.

Clinton has come under fire for her use of a private email server, but Albright said she thinks her loss came more from the way she was characterized by the press and Trump.

"That's not what she's like," she said. "I think that the real thing though that we keep hearing and I think is true is there is a huge division in this country ... I'm a naturalized American, a grateful American. And makes me very sad to see that the kinds of divisions that are in this country and kind of setting us against each other, which is why I think her message in terms of us working together and stronger together is something that we have to keep remembering."

Albright said she agrees with Clinton and President Barack Obama's call to support Trump and to get "him and the people around him to understand the complexity of the issues that are out there."

She does not believe Clinton will give up, despite her loss, and she will remain determined about her causes, including children, women, climate change, and workers "really helping the workers.

"I'm so proud to know her and so proud of what she did as a candidate," Albright said.
