Sen. Mark Kirk says Donald Trump needs him to be re-elected because he will be a great asset to the billionaire businessman if he becomes the nation's next president.
"I've been thinking, in an age of Trump where you don't know the direction of the country, the person you need most is a steady conservative hand like Mark Kirk in the Senate to be advising the president," Kirk told
USA Today.
"Especially on national security topics …which is my particular expertise after 23 years in the Navy."
Kirk — an Illinois Republican facing a tough challenge from Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth — called Trump a "Riverboat gamble" whom he'd "had my reservations" about, but says he plans to support him.
