House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said Congress should cancel its recess if there is no tax reform proposal before August.

"We believe that time is of the essence," Meadows said at an event at The Heritage Foundation.

His remarks were reported by The Hill.

The Freedom Caucus has also called on the House to work through the August recess to advance Republican priorities, including tax reform, The Hill noted.

And Meadows said Congress has "to make sure that we put the priorities of the American people first on the legislative agenda."

Meadows said he supports a lower tax rate for corporations, as well as for businesses whose income is taxed through the individual code, The Hill said. And he acknowledged the consensus isn't there for a border adjustment tax.

Meadows has been urging the House GOP to drop the border adjustment tax, the Washington Examiner reported.

"The political facts are: There is not consensus to have support for the border adjustment tax," said Meadows.
