Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe reportedly met with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently to seek the billionaire's help in his race against Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

The two met in New York a week-and-a-half ago, two sources told Politico.

McAuliffe aides declined to comment and Politico reported that its emails enquiring about the meeting went unanswered by a Bloomberg spokesman.

Bloomberg has used his support for tougher gun control measures, as well as his group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, to help back candidates around the country who favor stronger background checks and other anti-gun measures. Many of them have been Democrats. The mayor is currently using his finances to help two state lawmakers in Colorado fight off a recall election because of their votes in favor of tougher gun laws.
