House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy says he's spoken with freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene about her push to impeach President Joe Biden just days after his inauguration, and even though he disagrees with her, she has the right to pursue charges.
"That's exactly what the Democrats did with President (Donald) Trump, and why we disagreed when they wanted to come after him for purely political reasons,” the California Republican said in an interview with Greta Van Susteren, reports The Hill.
Greene, R-Ga., filed articles of impeachment on Biden's first full day in office. The text of the articles wasn't made immediately available, but Greene hinted that she was accusing Biden of having abused his power while he was still vice president under former President Barack Obama, by allowing son Hunter to serve on a Ukrainian energy company board
“I think Republicans are better than that," McCarthy said. "That this is one of the arguments we used against the Democrats, and I don't think we should use it either."
He added that he also does not think the "timing and the case" are correct at this time.
Greene did not respond immediately to The Hill for comment.
Biden denies his son's job affected his decisions during the Obama administration, and a Senate Republicans' investigation did not find wrongdoing on the part of either the president or his son.
Greene's announcement came after the House voted a week earlier to impeach Trump. Her own candidacy drew attention nationally after revelations that she'd made comments supporting the QAnon conspiracy theory.
