Biden's Strength Among Black Vote Is Sinking Sanders

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has vowed to deliver a unified Democratic party, but Joe Biden's strength among black voters in the south and Michigan has been the difference in turning the Democratic primary, according to CNN exit polling.

The black vote in Mississippi went to Biden over Sanders by a 6-1 margin with around 80% of black voters in exit polling choosing Biden vs. Sanders (around 10%).

The loss in Michigan is a telling, and ominous, one for Sanders, who surprised Hillary Clinton in the state in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary.

Biden's strategy has been to own the urban areas and compete in the rural areas and it has proved to turn the Democratic primary well into the former vice president's favor. Biden served eight years under former President Barack Obama, the first black president in U.S. history.

Biden was buoyed by a big victory in South Carolina before his Super Tuesday rout, and now has given him a commanding lead in the delegate count, according to AP projections.

In 2016, Sanders had done well in Super Tuesday II, sweeping the states of Michigan, Washington, Mississippi, Missouri, Idaho, and North Dakota.

Biden, meanwhile, is expected to do well in next Tuesday primary states of Arizona, Florida, Illinois, and Ohio, setting him up well for the long haul for the Democratic nomination.
