The texts between two high-ranking FBI officials shows that the real story about the 2016 election isn't that Russia interfered in it, but that people in the "highest levels of government" were doing all they could to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office, Mike Huckabee said Friday,

"It is why this whole Russian interference in the election story has just become a yawner," the former Arkansas governor told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"The real story is were there people in the highest levels of government who actively did everything they could to make sure Donald Trump didn't become president."

Huckabee said it would be a big story if Russia attempted to influence the election, but an even bigger story if the United States' government had tried to influence it, and "more and more evidence is pointing in that direction."

"That ought to scare everybody in the country who loves the Constitution and who loves a fair election," Huckabee added.

The messages between FBI agent Peter Strzok and agency attorney Lisa Page aren't only disturbing, he said, but he wants to know how the two, who were romantically involved, had the time to send thousands of text messages to each other.

"Shouldn't they be working?" he asked. "Don't we have a better expectation to pay these people would give them something more important to do? If they don't have any more job to get done than sit around texting each other thousands of times, maybe they're two extraneous employees who need to be terminated and sent home so they can spend all their time texting each other."

Meanwhile, The New York Times reported, through the use of anonymous sources, that Trump had ordered special counsel Robert Mueller's termination, but that his attorney threatened to quit if that happened.

"The New York Times has anonymous sources," Huckabee said. "The other side is quoted by the president himself, who is a first person. The only person who really knows. I think I would take his word over "The New York Times," who is a one-note chime. They've missed the whole big story that is going on."

Under Trump, he continued, taxes are down, the stock market is up, and ISIS has been greatly diminished.

"Trump has the world economic leaders eating out of his hand," Huckabee said. "What's The New York Times worried about? Something that didn't even happen. Last time I checked this morning, Bob Mueller is still on the job."
