Vice President Mike Pence characterized his newly named vice presidential opponent Kamala Harris as "overtaken by the radical left."

"Kamala Harris will be the Democrat candidate for vice president, so let me take this opportunity to welcome her to the race," Pence told a crowd in Mesa, Ariz., at "Latter-day Saints for Trump" event.

"I mean, look, we all know, Joe Biden and the Democratic Party have been overtaken by the radical left, so, given their promises of higher taxes, open borders, socialized medicine, and abortion on demand, it's no surprise that he chose Sen. Harris to be his running mate.

"You all might like to know that the vice presidential debate is Oct. 7 in Utah. So my message to the Democratic nominee for vice president: congratulations. I'll see you in Salt Lake City."

Salt Lake City, Utah, is the planned host for the Oct. 7 vice presidential debate. It will be the second of the four planned 2020 campaign debates, the other three featuring President Donald Trump against Biden.

Both Pence and Harris have had big moments in debates. Pence famously was lauded by then-candidate Trump as his running mate after his debate performance against Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va. Never-Trumpers even trolled Trump, suggesting Pence should have been atop the ticket in 2016 against Hillary Clinton.

Harris had some memorable moments in the Democrat primary debates, famously saying Americans do not "want a food fight, they want to know how we put food on their table." Also, she sternly pressured Joe Biden on his segregationists school busing policies.
