President Donald Trump is considering moving Mike Pompeo from leading the CIA to head of the National Security Council, The New York Times is reporting.

Making Pompeo as his national security adviser would have the corresponding move of sending current NSA H.R. McMaster to Afghanistan to stabilize a war effort that Trump sees as a losing effort, The Times reports.

If consummated, the moves would come amid a flurry of changes in Trump's administration.

McMaster has been purging allies of former NSA Michael Flynn from the NSC, the latest being Ezra Cohen-Watnick, announced by the White House on Wednesday. Three others have been booted off the NSC by McMaster recently, too.

Pompeo has had a stable run as CIA director thus far after smooth confirmation hearings that culminated with a 66-32 approval by the Senate that included backing from Democrats.

Pompeo has repeatedly sided with the other chiefs of the intelligence community that Russia meddled in the election and "loves to stick it to the U.S."
