Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Sunday delivered a soft slap at President Donald Trump for dissing a federal jurist as a "so-called judge" after his ruling against a travel halt on seven Muslim-majority countries.
In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," the Kentucky Republican said he supports rigorous vetting to prevent suspected terrorists from entering the United States.
"But there is a fine line here between proper vetting and interfering with the kind of travel or suggesting a religious test," he said.
When asked about Trump's lashing out at Judge James Robart of the Western District of Washington after his ruling against Trump's immigration order, McConnell sounded a note of caution.
"I think it is best not to single out judges," he said. "We all get disappointed from time to time, I think it is best to avoid criticizing them individually."
During the 2016 presidential campaign, McConnell criticized Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban all Muslims from entering the country as "completely and totally inconsistent with American values."
