President Donald Trump slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday after the Kentucky Republican said that the president had "excessive expectations" regarding his agenda, particularly on repealing and replacing Obamacare.

Trump took to Twitter:

McConnell told a Rotary Club in Florence Monday that "our new president, has of course, not been in this line of work before and I think had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process.

"So, part of the reason I think people think we're underperforming is because too many kind of artificial deadlines unrelated to the reality of the complexity of legislating may not been fully understood," McConnell said.

He added that he found criticism that the Senate had not accomplished anything major "extremely irritating."

The majority leader's comments automatically brought strong backlash from conservatives, including Fox News host Sean Hannity, and Dan Scavino Jr., Trump's social media director, who tweeted this earlier Wednesday:

Trump has made repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act central to his agenda — and McConnell failed to rally Republicans last month to pass legislation that would repeal several basic elements of the healthcare plan.

The 51-49 tally came after Arizona Sen. John McCain, who had returned to Washington from recent brain cancer surgery, cast a decisive early morning vote.

House Republicans, who passed their Obamacare repeal plan in May, have voted more than 50 times to end the law over the past seven years.
