Mitt Romney is speaking out in opposition to Donald Trump because he feels that it's in the best interest of the country, according to Beth Myers, his former campaign manager.

"He feels he's putting country over party,"  Myers said when she appeared on the David Axelroad's "Axe Files" podcast, according to CNN

Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, has voiced his opposition to Trump, despite Trump's status as the likely 2016 Republican presidential nominee.

"I don't want to see trickle-down racism," Romney said during a Wolf Blitzer interview.

"Trickle-down racism, trickle-down bigotry, trickle-down misogyny, all these things are extraordinarily dangerous to the heart and character of America."

Myers said she has discussed Romney's opposition to Trump with the former candidate, and is "very comfortable with his position." She added that his speaking out against Trump is a matter of conscience.

"He couldn't do it any other way and put his head on a pillow at night," she said.

Myers was Romney's campaign manager during his presidential race and was his chief of staff when he was governor of Massachusetts. She began working in politics for the Reagan presidential campaign in 1980, according to her political adviser profile at Shawmut Group.

Myers credits Trump's success with voters.

"He clearly reflects the voters who voted in the Republican primaries. He showed strongly in many, many states and the voters were heard," she said.

However, Myers appears to have reservations about Trump.

"Does he reflect my visions of America and the Republican party? No," she said.

Trump's campaign chairman Paul Manafort has rebutted Romney's comments, calling him "a coward," according to CNN
