Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is running for a Utah Senate seat, praised President Donald Trump during a recent interaction with voters near Salt Lake City.
According to the Washington Examiner, Romney was questioned by voters on myriad topics at a campaign stop in West Valley City, Utah. One of the questions was about Romney's thoughts on Trump's first 15 months in office.
"His first year is very similar to things I'd have done my first year. The things he's actually done have been better than I expected," Romney said.
Romney was a finalist to be Trump's secretary of state, but Trump ultimately passed on the 2012 Republican presidential candidate and went with Rex Tillerson — who was recently replaced by Mike Pompeo.
Romney infamously criticized Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, which may have been a factor in Trump's decision not to nominate him to his cabinet. Romney told voters in Utah that he'll speak his mind about the president when he feels it's necessary to do so.
"If he says something which I believe is racist or divisive and serious, then I'll point out that I disagree with that," Romney said. "But I'm an honest enough person that if he does something right — and by the way, he's done a number of things right — I'll be fully supportive of those things.
"I will support the president's agenda when it's good for Utah and good for the country, and so far that's been the case."
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, is retiring at the end of this year. Romney is running for his seat.
