Mitt Romney on Friday issued a strong rebuke against Senate candidate Roy Moore, making the distinction between criminal proceedings and elections.

Moore is taking fire from all sides — including many Republicans — over a report that he fondled and pursued underage girls, including a 14-year-old, nearly 40 years ago.

Even President Donald Trump said Moore will step aside "if claims are true." Moore, however, is denying the accounts of the women in The Washington Post report, calling them "fake news."

Moore is set to square off against Democrat Doug Jones next month in a special election for the seat vacated by former Sen. Jeff Sessions when he became attorney general.
