House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Sunday rebuked Democratic calls to impeach President Donald Trump, saying it’s “not someplace I think we should go.”
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the California Democrat said “that isn’t what [Democrats’] election is about.”
“Our election is about meeting the needs of the American people, stopping this tax bill right now, which is an insult to the intelligence of the American people, an assault on their financial security,” she said. “That's what we should be talks about."
“The left of our party is still annoyed with me for not impeaching President [George W.] Bush for going into Iraq,” she said. “What could be worse than that? But the fact is, that we've got to really be saying what this election means to people in their lives. Somebody has some facts that come forth about President Trump…let the chips fall where they may. It's not someplace I think we should go."
She also called Trump’s comments “stunning” that it would be a “disgrace” for the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller to continue.
“The fact is that we have to follow the facts,” she said, adding: “[I] still think we should have an outside commission that is not to conflict with what any of them are doing, but to give us a real picture of what happens so that it doesn't happen again. This is about our system and assault made on it. We have to know the facts as we go forward.”
"You would think that the president of the United States who takes the oath to defend the constitution would be the first one to say whatever it was we have to protect our electoral system. He hasn't done that."
