In a historic change of heart, NeverTrump Republicans, emboldened by yet another Democratic impeachment effort, are now defending the president, because "Eh, never mind, he's fine," The New York Times reported.
"'Never Trump' no more, conservatives have largely resigned themselves to a more accommodating state of mind: 'Never mind Trump,'" the Times' Jeremy W. Peters wrote. "And their change in attitude helps to mute the much smaller group of conservative voices who remain highly critical of the president and have questioned his conduct."
Peters' report included Brent Bozell III, Media Research Center founder who once wrote "Trump might be the greatest charlatan of them all," but has become a "convert" and has published a book defending Trump against the media and Democratic resistance movement, "Unmasked: Big Media's War Against Trump."
"This is the story of a media that set out to destroy a president and his administration, but destroyed themselves instead," Bozell's preface reads.
Among the other staunch NeverTrumpers to convert is conservative blogger Erick Erickson, who went from rebuking Trump's candidacy because he was a "fascist" and "a racist."
But this week his blog headline bellowed, "I Support the President."
Conservative pundit Glenn Beck rebuked then-candidate Trump as "an immoral man who is absent decency or dignity," but now says an America without President Trump winning in 2020 would "the end of the country as we know it," saying this impeachment inquiry basis was nothing but "a political setup," the Times reported.
Female leaders of the anti-abortion movement might be the most moved to support President Trump, Peters wrote.
"I endorsed Rick Santorum in 2012, and Mike Huckabee, but at the end of the day, I'm not sure those guys I love and admire would have had the guts to do what Trump has done," Penny Young Nance, who signed a 2016 statement with anti-abortion activists opposing Trump, told the Times.
National Review editor Rich Lowry regrets the formation of the NeverTrump movement, per the Times.
"I wish they'd never come up with that phrase," Lowry told the Times.
