New Jersey is the 12th state to legalize recreational marijuana.

According to the Associated Press, New Jersey voters backed a ballot initiative that permits people over the age of 21 to possess and use recreational marijuana.

AP called the race just after 9:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday with about 67% of New Jersey voters supporting the measure and 32% voting against legalization, with about 57% of votes counted.

NorthJersey.com reports that marijuana purchases would be taxed at the state sales tax rate, which is 6.625%, and likely with an additional 2% tax levied by municipalities where the purchase takes place.
