Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich lauded Donald Trump on Twitter Thursday for sealing the delegates needed to win the Republican presidential nomination.

Here are the posts from the former Georgia congressman, who has been rumored as a possible Trump running mate:

Trump gained the required 1,237 delegates Thursday after North Dakota Republicans awarded him the state's 28 unbound delegates. The state did not have a primary or caucus.

"The folks behind me got us right over the top from North Dakota," Trump said, flanked by delegates, at a news conference in Bismark. "North Dakota made a big statement — and I just really appreciate it. We will not forget it."

Gingrich, 72, who was speaker from 1995 to 1999, has been rumored as a possible Trump running mate for weeks.

A top Trump candidate told Newsmax earlier this month that the former speaker topped the developer's list of leading candidates.

Gingrich himself told Fox News recently that "you have to look at it very seriously, of course" regarding a No. 2 slot.
