Marco Rubio may have signaled a push to become Donald Trump's running mate with his
late-night tweetstorm complaining about a Washington Post report that said he's not part of the presumptive GOP nominee's short list,
Newt Gingrich, who has been reportedly under consideration for the spot, speculated Tuesday morning.
"I think he was irritated," the former House speaker told Fox News'
"Fox & Friends" program. "It's possible that he actually wants to be considered and I know a number of people — Sean Hannity, among others — have said. 'Gee, I guess Marco is out of it, as [Ohio Gov. John] Kasich seems to be out of it.'"
But, he continued, "Marco decided I'm not sure I wanted to be out of it. As he's proving this morning he's found a way to get back into it. Tweeting can have an amazing impact for national figure."
Meanwhile, Trump has said he's not considering Rubio and won't say who his running mate will be until the Republican convention this summer in Cleveland, but Gingrich said the eventual choice will likely be revealed through process of elimination.
"If he keeps going through saying he's not on the list, he's not on the list, we'll figure out who's left," said Gingrich. "It's a limited universe of lists."
As for himself, Gingrich said he'd have to think about an offer.
He and wife Calista have a new book out,
"Rediscovering God in America," and are planning a premiere for their new documentary,
"The First American," this weekend.
"We stay busy," said Gingrich. "What does he want? What kind of a job does he want? You know?"
He said he and his wife would need to sit down and speak with Trump and his team about the role they have in mind, but meanwhile, he is close to former Vice President Dick Cheney and has seen how effective he was.
"On the other hand, I have seen some vice presidents who frankly were sitting out there waiting patiently to see whether or not the president died," said Gingrich. "I mean, if the primary job is you get 214 funerals to go to, it's hard to get excited."
But the decision is Trump's, said Gingrich, and "all I can report to you guys I don't know if I'm on or off the list, but I haven't gotten any phone calls. I can't report anything accurately."
