Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he's open to the idea being Donald Trump's running mate – but that's it not "an automatic 'yes'."

In an interview with "Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace," Gingrich said he'd be more than willing to talk with the presumptive GOP presidential nominee about a No. 2 spot on the party's White House ticket.

"If he asks me, I'm certainly going to say I want to sit down and talk about it," tells host Wallace. "I don't think it's an automatic yes."

A clip of the exchange was posted ahead of the show by The Hill.

Gingrich said in particular, he wants to talk about what Trump thinks the No. 2 job would involve — and that if the brash billionaire could convince him the VP role is "doable" and "serious," then he'd be "hard pressed not to say yes."

But asked if he'd be interested in the job, Gingrich wavered.

"I don't know," he replied. "It's certainly a great challenge, but...I have a pretty interesting, exciting life.

"We're pretty busy, but we could be lured into a new path," he added.
