A new poll of likely voters in Maine shows that President Barack Obama holds a 12-point lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
The Rasmussen Reports telephone poll shows Obama with the support of 52 percent and Romney 40 percent. The poll of 500 likely voters, conducted September 25, also found that 4 percent favor some other candidate and 4 percent remain undecided.
The numbers are enough to designate the state “Safe Obama” in the Rasmussen Reports Electoral College Projections. In 2008, Obama defeated GOP standard bearer John McCain by a 58 percent to 41 percent margin.
Rasmussen notes that among Mainers, “Obama leads Romney in terms of trust in five major policy areas, with double-digit leads when it comes to health care, taxes and energy policy. The president’s ahead by eight points on the issue of national security and leads by seven when it comes to the economy.”
