Donald Trump, in an attempt to take a swipe at recent news Obamacare premiums would rise by as much as 25 percent in 2017, erroneously stated Tuesday during a speech in Doral, Fla., his employees were already having issues with the healthcare program.
"Obamacare needs to be repealed and replaced, and it has to be replaced with something much less expensive for the people," Trump said. "Otherwise it's going to present even bigger trouble than anybody thought. So we're going to repeal and replace Obamacare. And I can say all of my employees are having a tremendous problem with Obamacare.
"You look at what they're going through with their healthcare is horrible because of Obamacare. So we'll repeal it and replace it. But this is about jobs. And we have thousands of employees in Florida."
There was a slight problem with his statement, though.
Trump quickly retracted what he said, and told reporters his employees don't have to deal with Obamacare because his company provides them with healthcare.
Later, in an interview with Fox News, per Politico, Trump seemed to "misunderstand how the Affordable Care Act works," stating he didn't use Obamacare because "it is so bad for the people and they can't afford it."
But employer-provided healthcare is wholly separate from Obamacare insurance, which is designed to offer health plans to Americans who do not get insurance from their job. Trump said of Obamacare, "we don't use it. So you know, when they interviewed those people, they're happy with their health coverage."
