Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, told Reuters Monday that repealing Obamacare should be off the table for now because Republicans are "too divided on healthcare."
Republicans suffered a major setback Friday when a stripped-down Obamacare repeal bill was defeated after three party members voted it down.
Hatch, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said he and other party members will take that message to the White House as President Donald Trump continues to push lawmakers to work on the bill.
Trump tweeted on Sunday:
White House budget director Mick Mulvaney on Sunday also said no other work should be done in the Senate — including the debt ceiling or tax reform — until there is another vote on healthcare.
"In the White House's view, they can't move on in the Senate," Mulvaney told host Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union."
Hatch is of a different opinion.
"I think we ought to acknowledge that we can come back to healthcare afterwards but we need to move ahead on tax reform," Hatch said.
