Forget the debate of whether there should be witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, there should not even be a trial on a "flimsy" case that equates to "basic trash," according to former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi.

"If you and I were falsely accused we would want witnesses too, but now this thing has become so flimsy that there's absolutely nothing there in the articles of impeachment," Bondi, a member of the president's legal team, told Fox News' "Justice with Judge Jeanine."

"It's an insult to the American people. It certainly is to the president, but I think now we're just ready to put this behind him."

Bondi denounced the impeachment attempt as a continuation of the "reckless obsession" of removing a president who was elected as a Washington outsider. The president's argument is this amounts to 2020 election meddling on behalf of the president's political opponents.

"They have not charged the president with any crime because the president did nothing wrong," Bondi added to Judge Jeanine Pirro. "There was no crime. The transcript of that phone call speaks for itself."

Bondi was referring to the July 2018 call with the president of the Ukraine where he asked for him to do a "favor" in investigating potential 2016 election meddling and corruption involving former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

It is the latter that spurred Democrats, very shortly after the Mueller report failed to produce a sufficient case for impeachment, to pursue removal of the president for what was ultimately two articles of impeachment: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

"It's insufficient on its face, on its merits, and yet they're sending this basic trash over to the U.S. Senate," Bondi concluded. "The Senate's a lot smarter than that. And, especially with Adam Schiff presenting, 'bring it on' because we're ready to go."

The opening statements of the Senate trial will begin Tuesday.
